    Exploratory Study on Selected Philippine Agricultural Commodity Import Statistics vis-à-vis Export Statistics of the Exporting Countries

    Using the import data compiled by the Philippines and comparing these with data as reported by the exporting countries, this study aims to determine the disparity of the statistics from the two sources on the quantity and value of selected agricultural commodities for the years 2000 to 2005. The products covered by this study consist of wholly or semi-milled rice, maize (corn), live poultry, domestic fowls, ducks, geese, frozen meat of bovine animals, apples, oranges, onions and shallots, and garlic. The differences in statistics on the bilateral transactions─in terms of FOB values, quantities, and derived unit prices─are examined by using percentage differences, the implicit minimal measurement error (IMME), and the Wilcoxon Matched-Pair Signed-Ranks (Wilcoxon-MPSR) test. Results show that considerable discrepancies between import and export statistics do exist. The discrepancy may reflect both legitimate conceptual differences between Philippine imports and exports statistics of the exporting countries, as well as errors in reporting. The discrepancy is further substantiated by the results of the Wilcoxon-MPSR test, which show that these differences are significant.

    Individual and community-level socioeconomic position and its association with adolescents experience of childhood sexual abuse : a multilevel analysis of six countries in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Background: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a substantial global health and human rights problem and consequently a growing concern in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined the association between individual and community-level socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood of reporting CSA. Methods: We applied multiple multilevel logistic regression analysis on Demographic and Health Survey data for 6,351female adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 years from six countries in sub-Saharan Africa, between 2006 and 2008. Results: About 70% of the reported cases of CSA were between 14 and 17 years. Zambia had the highest proportion of reported cases of CSA (5.8%). At the individual and community level, we found that there was no association between CSA and socioeconomic position. This study provides evidence that the likelihood of reporting CSA cut across all individual SES as well as all community socioeconomic strata. Conclusions: We found no evidence of socioeconomic differentials in adolescents’ experience of CSA, suggesting that adolescents from the six countries studied experienced CSA regardless of their individual- and community-level socioeconomic position. However, we found some evidence of geographical clustering, adolescents in the same community are subject to common contextual influences.     Monitoring Muscle Stem Cell Cultures with Impedance Spectroscopy

    The aim of this work is to present a new circuit for the real-time monitoring the processes of cellular growth and differentiation of skeletal myoblast cell cultures. An impedance spectroscopy Oscillation-Based technique is proposed for the test circuit, converting the biological system into a voltage oscillator, and avoiding the use of very high performance circuitry or equipment. This technique proved to be successful in the monitoring of cell cultures growth levels and could be useful for determining the degree of differentiation achieved, of practical implications in tissue engineering.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2013-46242-C3-1-

    PENINGKATAN KUALITAS PRODUK MINYAK NILAM DENGAN PENDEKATAN SIX-SIGMA

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperbaiki kualitas hasil produksi penyulingan minyak nilam mulai dari mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor penyebab rendahnya kualitas minyak nilam yang dihasilkan akibat proses penyulingan yang tidak optimal dan memberikan rekomendasi solusi untuk meningkatkan kualitas minyak nilam dengan menggunakan pendekatan six-sigma diharapkan hasil produksi minyak nilam dapat memenuhi standar kualitas yang tinggi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa pada tahap difine terdapat patchouli alcohol yang masih berada dibawah 30%, pada tahap measure Xbar chart mengalami penurunan dan melewati batas bawah control. Nilai kapabilitas proses yang didapat dari patchouli alcohol dengan nilai Cp 0,70 dan Cpk 0,56 Cpk nilai tersebut masih sangat rendah, DPMO yang diperoleh adalah 1,37 dan nilai sigma adalah 2,59, artinya perlu dilakukan tahap Analyze yaitu mencari sebab akibatnya. Penyebab rendahnya kualitas Patchouli alcohol adalah metode, lingkungan, material, faktor manusia, dan peralatan. Sehingga diperlukan tahap Improve yaitu memberikan solusi, dan tahap control untuk merekomendasikan usulan perbaikan. Dengan menggunakan metode six-sigma dapat mengetahui faktor penyebab rendahnya patchouli alcohol dan dapat merekomendasikan perbaikan usulan untuk membantu usaha Bunga Tani dalam meningkatkan kualitas minyak nilam mereka dan memenuhi spesifikasi yang ditetapka

    Search for an exosphere in sodium and calcium in the transmission spectrum of exoplanet 55 Cancri e

    [Abridged] The aim of this work is to search for an absorption signal from exospheric sodium (Na) and singly ionized calcium (Ca+^+) in the optical transmission spectrum of the hot rocky super-Earth 55 Cancri e. Although the current best-fitting models to the planet mass and radius require a possible atmospheric component, uncertainties in the radius exist, making it possible that 55 Cancri e could be a hot rocky planet without an atmosphere. High resolution (R\sim110000) time-series spectra of five transits of 55 Cancri e, obtained with three different telescopes (UVES/VLT, HARPS/ESO 3.6m & HARPS-N/TNG) were analysed. Targeting the sodium D lines and the calcium H and K lines, the potential planet exospheric signal was filtered out from the much stronger stellar and telluric signals, making use of the change of the radial component of the orbital velocity of the planet over the transit from -57 to +57 km/sec. Combining all five transit data sets, we detect a signal potentially associated with sodium in the planet exosphere at a statistical significance level of 3σ\sigma. Combining the four HARPS transits that cover the calcium H and K lines, we also find a potential signal from ionized calcium (4.1 σ\sigma). Interestingly, this latter signal originates from just one of the transit measurements - with a 4.9σ\sigma detection at this epoch. Unfortunately, due to the low significance of the measured sodium signal and the potentially variable Ca+^+ signal, we estimate the p-values of these signals to be too high (corresponding to <4σ\sigma) to claim unambiguous exospheric detections. By comparing the observed signals with artificial signals injected early in the analysis, the absorption by Na and Ca+^+ are estimated to be at a level of approximately 2.3×103\times 10^{-3} and 7.0×102\times 10^{-2} respectively, relative to the stellar spectrum.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, submission updated after English language editing, submission updated to correct a mistaken cross-reference noticed in A&A proo

    Larga batalla de un paciente con sida y tuberculosis recurrente: ¿reinfección o reactivación?

    The advent of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain genotyping has allowed differentiation between disease relapse and exogenous re-infection. We report here a remarkable case of multiply recurrent tuberculosis in a patient living with HIV. Between 1995 and 2009, a young HIV-infected intravenous drug user, who was reluctant to comply with anti-retroviral treatment, underwent at least five tuberculosis episodes caused by three distinct M. tuberculosis strains sharply differentiated by drug susceptibility profile, genotype and infectious source. Eventually, the patient died during a relapse of tuberculosis due to a notorious multidrug-resistant outbreak-strain, which infected him during a prolonged hospitalization in the epicentre of such outbreak. Whether recurrent tuberculosis is due to a new infection or to reactivation of a previous one is a century-long controversial question. In our patient, both conditions alternated throughout his 15 years of living with HIV. Cases such as this might not be exceptional in certain underprivileged suburban areas of Argentina and should raise concern over three pending issues in tuberculosis control policies, namely secondary preventive therapy, institutional infection control and patient follow-up throughout the health network system.La genotipificación de aislamientos clínicos de Mycobacterium tuberculosis permite diferenciar entre recaída y reinfección exógena. Presentamos un notable caso de tuberculosis recurrente asociado a sida. Entre 1995 y 2009, un usuario de drogas ilegales por vía endovenosa, con infección por el VIH pero reacio al tratamiento antirretroviral, sufrió cinco episodios de tuberculosis causados por tres cepas de M. tuberculosis. Las cepas se diferenciaron por los genotipos, los perfiles de sensibilidad a antibióticos y las fuentes de infección. El paciente murió de tuberculosis por una cepa multirresistente, responsable de un extenso brote en Argentina, que lo infectó durante una prolongada internación en el hospital que fue el epicentro de dicho brote. La controversia sobre el origen de la tuberculosis recurrente –reinfección o reactivación– lleva ya un siglo y continúa vigente. En el caso que aquí se describe, las dos situaciones se alternaron a lo largo de los 15 años de lucha contra el sida que atravesó este paciente. Esta situación puede no ser excepcional en áreas suburbanas desfavorecidas de Argentina, y pone en evidencia tres temas insuficientemente atendidos en nuestro medio: el tratamiento preventivo de la tuberculosis secundaria, el control de su transmisión en hospitales y cárceles, y el seguimiento de los pacientes a través del sistema de salud.Fil: Reniero, A..     Synthesis of glass nanocomposite powders

    The aim of the present study was to synthesize CaO·GeO2 nanocomposite poweders glasses. The sample were prepared to 1450°C°. To investigate the structure of the samples, Differential Thermal Analysis (DSC), X-ray diffraction and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used. The main crystallising phase was found to be CaGe205 crystals. The molar ratio of Ge06/Ge04 groups increases with the CaO·GeO2 molar ratio. Furthermore, in order to study the potential antibacterial properties of the materials the Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria was used and the diameter of zone of inhibition was observed

    Designing Serious Games for Education: From Pedagogical Principles to Game Mechanisms

    International audienceSGs represent an important opportunity for improving education thanks to their ability to compel players and to present realistic simulations of real-life situations. The scientific community is aware that we are just at the beginning of a proper use of gaming technologies for education and training and, in particular, there is a need for scientific and engineering methods for building games not only as more realistic simulations of the physical world, but as means that provide effective learning experiences. This requires an ever closer cooperation among the various actors involved in the overall SG life- chain, putting pedagogy in a central role, given the educational target of the SGs. This paper addresses the till-now inadequate integration of educational and game design principles and proposes techniques, methods and mechanisms that allow designers with different background to dialogue among each other and to define games that are able to integrate - by design - entertainment and educational features. In particular, the paper follows a design path that starts from the definition of reference frameworks and then analyses the typical categories of design patterns, before focusing on the user-interaction modalities - seen from a pedagogical point of view - given their relevance for the end-users. In the end, we discuss the sandbox serious game model, that looks suited to implement - by design - joint pedagogical and entertainment features. We believe that the indications provided in this paper can be useful for researchers and stakeholders to understand the typical issues in SG design and to get inspiration about possible solutions that take into account the need to implement tools that are effective both as an entertainment medium and as an education tool

    Attribute-aware Diversification for Sequential Recommendations

    Users prefer diverse recommendations over homogeneous ones. However, most previous work on Sequential Recommenders does not consider diversity, and strives for maximum accuracy, resulting in homogeneous recommendations. In this paper, we consider both accuracy and diversity by presenting an Attribute-aware Diversifying Sequential Recommender (ADSR). Specifically, ADSR utilizes available attribute information when modeling a user's sequential behavior to simultaneously learn the user's most likely item to interact with, and their preference of attributes. Then, ADSR diversifies the recommended items based on the predicted preference for certain attributes. Experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that ADSR can effectively provide diverse recommendations while maintaining accuracy.Comment: AIIS 2020, as part of SIGIR 2020 https://aiis.newidea.fun
